I enjoy reading both fiction and non-fiction. I believe that there are two very important factors that non-fiction books must have: interesting subject matter, and a clear author's voice that draws you in. Let's face it, a lot of non-fiction can be about the most interesting topic in the world, but is often written in such a dry and clinical tone that it puts you to sleep. That definitely isn't the case here.Ms. Crimi put a lot of herself in this book, after all it is her story of how Katrina affected her as a FEMA inspector. And it is exactly what a book like this needs, because her voice is a comforting and entertaining counterpoint to some truly horrific tales of devastation. Even when the horror that surrounds her becomes too much, she misses not seeing her children for months, and nothing seems to go right, the compassion she shows to the people she is trying to help shines through. I was expecting a book on this topic to be depressing, but the tone is respectful and hopeful.
I think this is a very important book because it shows such a different side of FEMA than what those of us not affected by the storm were shown by the media. Criticism of FEMA was rampant after the storm, but this reminds us that they aren't some faceless government agency. Like any government agency or big corporation it is made up of all types of people, and some of those people really do care about the work they do and the people they are able to help. Often it is those on the bottom rung of the ladder who work the hardest, and also recognize how ridiculous and out of touch some of the decisions made by upper management can be.
My only complaint is that this is only the first part of the story and I wish they were combined, simply because I selfishly want to know what happens next!

I was taken in by Amy's book. It gave me a better understanding of what Katrina actually left in the paths of many people. It was a true insight to what house inspectors have to deal with and what they sacrifice personally in order to give devastated others a grasp of hope. It takes dedication to hang in there and ride the storm out to the end. Thanks to the many people who stuck around.
I'm so excited to see my niece in "print." Quite a good little story from a viewpoint people would not normally have. Having lived through the depressing aftermath of Hurricane Charley 10 years ago (and we were not near as bad off as the Katrina folks,) I had a clear picture of what Amy was painting with the words in her book. Accurate, humorous, and down-right every day life told by a fine, first-time published writer.
I was torn because I couldn't really put the book down and at the same time I didn't want the story to end. Which is always a good sign of a great book. I am very excited to read the upcoming sequel to My Eye in the Storm. I felt this author took me on a journey of both devastation and hope. Having been through many hurricanes in my lifetime, I was able to experience the aftermath of one in a way that I never would have had I not read this book. I would definitely recommend this book and am looking very forward to part 2.
Crimi has some really interesting stories to tell about the people and places she encountered and it's worth reading the book, as long as you are prepared to suffer (or skip over) the irritating romantic sub-plot that the publisher has clearly demanded she weave into the book. It's just so obviously a fiction created to 'spice things up'. The book just didn't need that element; it's a strong enough work without the added romantic element and would have been a much better book without it.
I rated this as high as I could because I think the author made me feel that I was part of the story as it went along. I too worked in inspections after Katrina destroyed so much of the Gulf Coast. This is what peaked my interest in the book and the review on that I found made me think this was something that I would enjoy. I was not wrong and I read most of the book with intensity to try to get the full meaning of what she was writing. In my experience with this disaster she nailed it to the T. This was hard times for a lot of people and she has a way of making you feel like you are there and experiencing everything with her. This is a mark of a great writer and lots of knowledge of the material at hand. I recommend this book to any who would like to experience how it was in the Gulf Coast area after the Storm did so much destruction.
I was hooked in the first couple of pages and couldn't put it down. I read it in its entirety in one sitting. It tells the story of Katrina from a new prospective. One you didn't hear on the evening news. This book tells a very human story of the human heart amongst the devastation and destruction after one of natures greatest disasters. The perfect combination of the mechanics of the job and the emotions of everyday survival in the field.
