When her husband exits their marriage after twenty-seven years, Carol seriously flips. Between nisi and absolute, the marital home is sold and her daughter takes her on what is supposed to be a recuperative holiday. The idea being to give Carol the strength to find a suitable Essex flat, but instead she finds a derelict Burgundian cottage that looks as deserted and as much in need of restoration as herself. She may not have managed without the support of the local café owner who speaks fluent French with a cockney accent, or the eight-year-old daughter of a local farmer who offers French lessons as well as pitching in to mend the roof, but gradually Carol rebuilds her cottage and her life. What Carol doesn’t need is ex-hubby barging in on her scene just as it looks as if a rather dishy feller could be adding a pleasant dimension to her new life. Not that she’s up for getting involved with anyone else when she’s still feeling bruised and wouldn’t dare trust her own feelings.

The change that takes place in the main character is not developed very well. After being left by her husband of almost 25 years and spending several months crying her eyes out, Carol suddenly sees a stone cottage in France and she is suddenly cured. I like these books about women stepping out of their comfort zones such as moving to another country to start over but this book was far fetched. In one scene, a child was using a blow torch. This woman could have her own "flip or flop" show on HGTV. I don't think the depth of character was developed and she seemed a bit shallow. I didn't care for her language either. Call me old fashioned, but I feel it was not necessary.

Escargot Days Mary Cassells 9781503365605 Books Reviews

Thoroughly enjoyed this read. Took me straight away to the enchantment of France. The "sexual" content is not really sexual content so much as implication and completely mild. It takes place between a husband and wife. How refreshing! Enjoyed the style of writing, the journey and the story. Worth my time.
Frankly, about halfway through the book I wanted to strangle this woman. She seemed to be angry with everyone...or at the very least, bitter. It was beginning to get on my nerves. And I was wondering how anyone ever liked her.

But then some really wonderful things happened and we saw some great changes all around. We saw progress on all fronts and it made the second half of the book a joy to read.

If you buy the book, stay with it. It's worth the journey.
This delightful tale of restoring a cottage in Burgundy while restoring her heart and confidence is like a breath of fresh air. Carol spares her readers no details of the misery of divorce at age 50, nor the hard work it took to renovate the old cottage but neither does she economise on the joy of the finished cottage or the pleasure of the local community who took her to their hearts.
Reading this book made me want to run right out to buy an old farm house fixer-upper in rural France. Instead I bought Mary Cassells next two books, which made me want to run right out to buy an old barge fixer-upper so that I could wander the waterways of Europe. What's our next adventure, Mary Cassells?!
What a wonderfully written book! I'm so hoping that there is a next one and a next one. I loved Carol and all her friends, the way they "clicked" upon meeting, then bonded for life. I loved "being inside" Carol's head, knowing what she was thinking and feeling as she made a new life for herself.

The pages came alive; I experienced the sights, smells, tastes, and textures of living in the French countryside.

I most definitely recommend this book. In all, it took me on a lovely escape to a rich life that I wish I had.
I didn't especially like Carol. She was a little dispassionate but what I did enjoy is the journey she took to find out who she was and what made her happy. She had the courage to leave her comfort zone and forge a life in another country and she allowed herself to love again. It won't blow you away but it's a nice rainy day read. Nicely done.
Escargot Days is a delightful read. I liked this book because the story is personal. Abandoned by her husband the heroine takes a bold step and buys an almost derelict cottage in an isolated corner of rural France. Here she remakes her life.
The reader is introduced to characters that are likeable and recognizable. Also the events plausible In short it is easy to relate to the characters and the events. There is not the obsession with building and renovating so popular in many books of this genre, although this does happen over the course of the book and serves to bring the plot together. Neither is the story all about France, one feels that the story could be set in any similar community anywhere.
if you want to lighthearted read about settling in a new place and making a fresh in life this is the book for you.
